What Is a Padel Americano? How the Format Works

An Americano is a social padel tournament where you change partners every round and play for your own score. It is one of the best ways to meet other players, and you don't need a regular partner or to be an advanced player to join. This guide explains how a padel Americano works, how it is scored, and how to join one at Padel Point.

What is a padel Americano?

In a padel Americano, every player competes individually but plays doubles throughout. You rotate partners after every round, so over the session you play alongside, and against, most of the other people in the group. Your score is your own, whoever you partner with.

How does an Americano work?

  1. Everyone registers on their own. You don't need a partner. At Padel Point you register in advance on Playtomic, and the organiser draws the pairings.
  2. Pairs and opponents are drawn each round. A schedule rotates the players so that partners and opponents change every round.
  3. Each round is played to a fixed number of points. Rounds are commonly played to 24 or 32 points, and the serve rotates every few points.
  4. Points are added to your total. If your pair wins a round 18 to 14, you each add 18 points to your personal total, and your opponents each add 14.
  5. The highest total wins. After the final round, the player with the most points wins the Americano.

How many players do you need?

Americanos work best with a number of players divisible by four, such as 8, 12 or 16, so every court is full for every round. With 16 players, four courts are in use at once.

At Padel Point, an Americano needs at least 12 players to go ahead, so you must register in advance on Playtomic. You can't just turn up on the day.

Why play an Americano?

  • No partner needed. Register on your own and play with everyone.
  • Great for beginners. You get a lot of game time and meet players of different levels.
  • Fair and social. Because partners rotate, results depend on your own play, not on who you were paired with.
  • Easy to organise. It works well for friends, social clubs and corporate groups.

Americano tips for your first time

  • Keep score on your own points, and cheer on your partners. Every point counts.
  • Talk with your partner at the start of each round: who takes the middle balls, and who plays the side.
  • Play to the middle when you're unsure. It limits the angles your opponents have.
  • Don't worry about your level. You'll get a mix of partners and opponents.

Dates and prices change, so check our tournaments on Playtomic for what's on and to book your spot.

Padel Americano: FAQs

Do I need a partner for an Americano?

No. You sign up on your own, and you play with a different partner each round. For other ways to meet players, read how to find padel players and partners in Sydney.

Can I just turn up on the day?

No. You need to register in advance on Playtomic, and each Americano needs at least 12 players to run.

Is an Americano suitable for beginners?

Yes. It is one of the friendliest formats for new players, because you play many short rounds with different people.

How is the winner decided?

The winner is the player with the highest total of points across all rounds, not the one who won the most matches.

How long does an Americano last?

That depends on the number of players and rounds. Our Saturday Americano sessions have been about two hours.

What should I bring?

Court shoes, water, and a racket if you have one. You can also hire a racket from $5 and balls for $3 per session at Padel Point. See our guide to racket hire and demo.
